Ingredients
- 5 pounds apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (about 10–12 medium)
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- optional: 1-2 tablespoons maple syrup
Instructions
- Place the sliced and peeled apples into a 6-quart slow cooker.
- Sprinkle the apples with brown sugar, pumpkin pie spice, and salt.
- Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours, stirring occasionally, until the apples are very soft and dark brown.
- Use an immersion blender or transfer in batches to a blender to puree until smooth.
- Stir in vanilla extract and maple syrup if desired, then cook uncovered on low for an additional 1-2 hours until thickened to your liking.
- Allow the apple butter to cool thoroughly before storing in airtight jars in the fridge or freezer.
Notes
Adjust the amount of brown sugar based on the sweetness of your apples.
Ensure that the apple butter is thick enough for your preference by cooking longer uncovered if necessary.
Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or freeze for longer storage.
