Ingredients

  • 5 pounds apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (about 1012 medium)
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • optional: 1-2 tablespoons maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Place the sliced and peeled apples into a 6-quart slow cooker.
  2. Sprinkle the apples with brown sugar, pumpkin pie spice, and salt.
  3. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours, stirring occasionally, until the apples are very soft and dark brown.
  4. Use an immersion blender or transfer in batches to a blender to puree until smooth.
  5. Stir in vanilla extract and maple syrup if desired, then cook uncovered on low for an additional 1-2 hours until thickened to your liking.
  6. Allow the apple butter to cool thoroughly before storing in airtight jars in the fridge or freezer.
