Ingredients

  • 1214 oz loaf french bread
  • 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup kraft caramel bits
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 8 oz crème fraîche

Instructions

  1. Cut the French bread into 2 to 3-inch cubes.
  2. Spray the slow cooker with non-stick spray.
  3. Press the bread down into the bottom of the slow cooker to compress it as much as possible.
  4. Pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the bread pieces.
  5. Whisk together the eggs, milk, and salt, then pour the mixture evenly over the bread.
  6. Cover the slow cooker and cook on high for 2 to 2 1/2 hours.
  7. Melt the caramel bits and heavy cream in a microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between until smooth.
  8. Slice the French toast casserole and serve topped with crème fraîche and the melted caramel or as desired.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use caramel-flavored condensed milk if available.
Crème fraîche is optional but adds a delightful creaminess.
This makes for an excellent make-ahead dish for brunch gatherings.
